Functions of Bones
Functions of bones are vital for each body and each bone is an organ including the blood vessels, nervous tissue, connective tissues such as blood, cartilage, bone and fibrous connective tissue.
Bone is a protective framework for the body. It is a living tissue that breaks old cells and produces new cells. The bones perform various functions that it must be light to carry them around and yet strong to be protective. Bones are not mere structures or framework, but include some main functions to our daily existence.
- Support: Bone holds together the organs and tissues thereby provide a structure. This is essential to support the body. Bones hold the body upright and without bones, organs and tissues will collapse on each other.
- Movement: Bones are attached to ligaments, tendons and muscles. The tendons attach bones to muscles and the ligaments keep the bones attached to bones. The movement and contraction of ligaments, muscles and tendons facilitate the bones in moving different ways and the joints between bones permit moving or bending in different directions.
- Protection: Bone structures offer the required support for the organs. The ribs protect the lungs and heart, while the brain is protected by the skull and it has a deep socket to fit your eyes. The pelvic bones protect reproductive organs of a female and the spinal cord protects the vertebrae.
- Mineral Storage: The two main minerals stored in bones required for the body are calcium and phosphorous. These two minerals are in every chemical reaction. Too much of any of the mineral in the bloodstream when found may be removed and stored in the bones. In case the blood supply of any of the mineral is low, then the minerals are taken from the bones to fulfill the need.
Bones are 95 percent of a body's blood cells. Nearly 2.6 million red blood cells in each second is produced by bone marrow. This is a soft tissue in the bone center. The blood cells start as stem cells such as red and white blood cells and platelets. Disruption of bones is due to forms of cancer.
